Bobby Balogna meets Wee Willy 2025. Siân Herbert

Born from a busking two piece, focusing on acoustic hip-hop and unamplified street performances, Binbags and Dur Brain recorded their first EP (Pig Socket 2013) in a caravan in Ohakune, New Zealand. With little to no equipment or experience (the inbuilt webcam microphone captured guitar, cajon and raps), the two burnt and sold CD's on the streets while both sleeping in the van. A few months passed before Dur Brain left NZ and returned to the UK where he helped form reggae rock outift 'Mama Jerk and the lady fingers'.

Upon Binbags returning 18 months later in 2014, Dur Brain had been working on some new productions with a little more firepower behind them and so their second EP 'Pussy Willis' began to take shape. When released in spring of 2016, long time collaborator Chris Jefferies had joined the live act on Bass and the three piece soon began to make a name for themselves in Bristol and beyond with their loud, melodic and scrappy twist on UK hip-hop.

Upon meeting Clarinetist Rysha Flint (Lounge Cats) in late 2016, Binbag Wisdom's live outfit became a 4 piece and found the sound that would define the live band and their following EP '100 years of Binbag Wisdom'. Recorded with Zack Nolan in Bristol and self-released through a crowdfunding campaign, 100 years was well recieved. With plays on Radio 6 Music and the Late Junction jazz show on Radio 3, these songs took BBW to play across the UK (Glastonbury festival, BBC introducing @ Latitude) and into Europe. Cramming a full bands worth of gear into Chris' Berlingo and driving from bristol to the Italian alps, or borrowing instuments to perform in Bulgaria or Croatia, the DIY approach that began on Cuba Street stays with BBW to this day.

After 2 years of self funded, self managed and self promoted perfomances, the first album 'CRUD LIFE' began to take shape. Recording at Ben Capp studios in Bristol with Ru Lemur on production and mixing, this album was a deep dive into the sound that the band had curated in their years of touring. With songs written by Binbags and fleshed out by the group on the road, this heartfelt collection of songs was a departure from the festival ready, swing influenced jazzy hip-hop sound of 100 years. The recording was all but finished by winter 2019 and set for a late spring 2020 release, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. A few live streamed concerts were not enough to promote the new album and, eventually releasing on the 1st of Jan 2021, CRUD LIFE would mark the end of the live band as they had been.

Binbags and Dur Brain, (due mostly to covid social distancing and budget restraints) went back to performing as a 2 piece guitar and cajon act for some seated shows in Bristol, and eventually recruited DJ Mr Fitz (a long time fan of the band) to take over the instrumental parts of the act. Dur Brain had been working more on his writing and production, releasing his debut EP 'The Crystal Fisting Ceremony' in 2021 and the two decided to go back to basics. DJ Mr Fitz, one of the UKs most accomplished scratch turntablists shared a love of 90's hip-hop with BBW and the three of them have been touring and releasing since 2021. With Binbags and Dur Brain joining Mr Fitz' own crew, JAMU for whom they provided the opening track 'Mic Check' for the album 'Hear the Sound'.
